Common Questions
The EIT Doctor of Engineering (DEng) is a practically oriented professional doctorate suited to the direct needs of solving industry problems, whereas a PhD track focuses more on academic or scientific research. The DEng prepares individuals for professional engineering with an emphasis on engineering practice, high technical competence, and innovation, preparing graduates for technical leadership roles in the engineering industry. It also includes significant coursework components and built-in support systems, including a dedicated learning support officer (LSO), to ensure candidates have the tools and know-how to engage in high-quality applied research.
The doctorate runs over three years with two semesters per year. The first year consists of four academic coursework units and a Research Project Proposal (DENG700). The second year requires candidates to complete four further units — two coursework electives and two research units (DENG802 and DENG804) — addressing deeper concepts in their discipline area. The third year is the dissertation year, where candidates complete DENG900 Doctoral Dissertation, extending their work on the project developed over the first and second years. The program comprises a total of 120 credit points: 88 research-based and 32 coursework credit points.
To be eligible for admission, applicants must have a BE Honours or Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) in Engineering with minimum Second-Class Honours Division A (H2A), OR an appropriate and relevant Master's degree in Engineering from EIT or another recognised tertiary institution, OR satisfy the Dean of their fitness to undertake advanced work (requiring a relevant four-year undergraduate engineering qualification plus at least five years of professional practice and evidence of original contributions). All applicants must also demonstrate an appropriate level of English Language Proficiency. Admission requires a written application comprising a 500-word personal statement and a 1000-word research proposal, as well as an interview.
The standard duration is three years full time, or the equivalent part-time study. Students enrolling in the online mode will initially commence as part-time students by default and may apply to convert to full-time status once supervisors have been allocated. After enrolment, the maximum time allowed to complete all units is 8 years.
Yes, the Doctor of Engineering is an academically accredited program by the Australian Government agency Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), and is classified as Level 10 under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The course may use MATLAB/SIMULINK software, though due to ongoing unit and course reviews, the software list may change.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
