In composition, students must present a portfolio of original compositions in a variety of genres showing the highest level of technical accomplishment and imaginative resource, a 45-minute lecture/demonstration followed by a 15-minute discussion, and a thesis of 30,000 to 40,000 words related to the composition portfolio. In performance, students must present two recitals of normally 70 to 90 minutes' duration demonstrating professional executant skill and interpretative ability, a 45-minute lecture/demonstration followed by a 15-minute discussion, and a thesis of 30,000 to 40,000 words related to aspects of the performances.
Students may commence at any time throughout the year, by agreement with their supervisors, so there is no fixed intake date.
Full-time students are expected to spend at least 30 hours per week on their research throughout the year, while part-time students are expected to spend at least 15 hours per week on their research throughout the year.
Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens may be offered a Tuition Fee Offset Scholarship through the Research Training Program (RTP), which offsets the requirement to pay a contribution toward the cost of their research course. This scholarship applies for up to a maximum of four years of full-time equivalent study and is administered by the Australian Government Department of Education.
