The Doctor of Optometry at the University of Melbourne is the first course of its kind in the southern hemisphere. It features immersive clinical training across metropolitan, rural, and international placements, and includes a mandatory research project with clinical relevance as part of the degree.
Clinical placements are integrated from day one of the program, ensuring students are work-ready through constant real-world practice. Students also have the opportunity to undertake clinical training at metropolitan, rural, and overseas sites as part of their final year of study.
The Doctor of Optometry is a 4-year full-time program delivered on campus at Parkville, with intake in March.
The program covers the basic and applied optical, visual, and biomedical sciences that underpin optometry, including the human visual system, optics, eye diseases, and clinical examinations. Students also complete a research project with clinical relevance as a required component of the degree.
