Common Questions
Domestic students may be eligible for the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset Scholarship, which covers tuition fees for up to the maximum period of candidature. However, students should expect ongoing costs not covered by the scholarship, such as travel, training, and professional development. If students take longer than the scholarship-covered period, an Overtime Administrative Levy applies per session. A Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) may also apply.
For 2026, the indicative first-year tuition fee for international students is AUD $51,205, with an indicative total tuition fee of AUD $219,065 for the full course duration. Fees are calculated daily based on enrolment, and the university reviews fee amounts each year. International students must also hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and may need to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
The research program is tailored to each student and designed in collaboration with supervisors and the Faculty of Science at the start of the PhD. Students study their chosen research topic over multiple years under expert mentorship, regularly presenting their research to a team of experts for assessment. The final output is a research thesis or practice-led research project (such as an algorithm or venture) examined for its unique contribution to the chosen field.
UTS accepts applications for research degrees across the year. If you have confirmed funding through a faculty scholarship, external scholarship, or are self-funding, you can apply at any time. To be considered for a scholarship, you need to apply by the relevant closing dates for Research Session 1 (January commencement) or Research Session 2 (July commencement).
PhD students in Mathematical Sciences at UTS have access to world-class facilities including Australia's first Super Lab, speciality maths, computing, and quantum physics facilities stocked with the latest industry equipment. Students are supported by leading experts, global networks, and the broader Faculty of Science community. Candidates are recommended to meet with their supervisor(s) at least once a month, and work may be carried out on university premises, at an external site, or a combination of both.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
