The Honorary Doctorate recognises José Ramos-Horta's work in the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen international relationships, advance regional stability, and bridge the gap between local knowledge and global responsibility.
CDU Interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Fiona Coulson explained that throughout his leadership roles as President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and international statesman, José Ramos-Horta has consistently championed the role of universities, scholars, and future leaders in strengthening democratic institutions, advancing regional cooperation, and addressing complex global challenges. CDU also cited its deep and enduring connection with Timor-Leste and its commitment to fostering opportunity across Northern Australia.
José Ramos-Horta was a co-recipient of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize for his work 'towards a just and peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor'. For more than four decades, he has advanced the cause of Timor-Leste through scholarship, diplomacy, and sustained global engagement, and during the long struggle for independence he acted as a political representative, bringing international attention to the voices and experiences of the Timorese people.
No. The Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) awarded to José Ramos-Horta is an honorary degree conferred by CDU in recognition of exceptional contributions to society, not a research qualification. It is distinct from CDU's Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which is a Higher Degree by Research open to prospective students.
The President of Timor-Leste joined more than 730 CDU graduands as they walked across the stage to receive their awards at the graduation ceremony held in May 2026.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
