About This Course

The Doctor of Philosophy - Business and Economics (DR-PHILBE) is an internationally recognised research doctorate delivered through the Faculty of Business and Economics (Melbourne Business School), in which candidates undertake original research on a specific topic under supervision. Candidates develop expert specialised research and analytical skills and communicate the outcomes of their research in a thesis and through oral presentation, demonstrating a systematic and critical understanding of a substantial and complex body of knowledge and making an original and significant contribution to knowledge. The course is offered across the disciplines of Accounting, Actuarial Studies, Business Administration and Analytics, Decision, Risk, and Financial Sciences, Economics, Finance, Management, and Marketing.

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

A four-year bachelor degree in a relevant discipline including a substantial research component (at least 25% of one year full-time study) with a minimum weighted average of 75% (80% for Economics) in final year subjects, OR a masters degree in a relevant discipline with an equivalent research component and minimum weighted average of 75%, OR equivalent qualification and professional experience
Discipline-specific masters requirements apply for Economics, Management, Marketing, and Business Administration
For Analytics, existing University of Melbourne direct-entry PhD admission requirements apply
A research proposal (except for Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Melbourne Institute applicants), a personal statement, referee reports (except for UoM graduates within the last 5 years), and endorsement of a prospective supervisor (Actuarial Studies and Business Administration & Analytics only)
