Applicants are required to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independent research and have adequate training and ability to pursue the proposed research course. Generally, this may be a master degree or bachelor degree with first or upper second class honours. For detailed information, applicants should refer to Section 3.2.1 of the HDR admission policy.
The program requires a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years equivalent full-time study, with a standard full-time duration of 4 years.
Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are successful applicants of a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program are eligible for a tuition fee exemption under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP), covering up to four years of full-time equivalent study for Doctoral or PhD programs. International students should refer to the information provided for international students.
Students will learn to demonstrate expert understanding of theoretical knowledge and reflect critically on that knowledge and their practice, think critically and evaluate existing knowledge, apply expert creative, technical and professional skills, explain and critique theoretical propositions and methodologies, present a complex investigation of originality for external examination against international standards, communicate complex research concepts to the general community and peers, and design, implement, analyse, theorise and communicate research that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge and/or professional practice.
The program is offered on campus at Curtin Perth. Intake dates are available in Research Term 1 and Research Term 2 for both 2026 and 2027. For specific start dates, applicants should view the academic calendar on the Curtin University website.
