All admitted students are fully funded. The package includes a full tuition waiver, an annual stipend of approximately A$35,000–A$45,000, up to 4.5 years of support with an additional fellowship year for research-intensive students, and substantial annual research funding including conference travel.
The PhD program begins with a one-year Master of Pre-Doctoral Business Studies (MPDBS), which includes coursework in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and applied economic analysis, as well as a research assistant program. Year Two involves eight elective research courses, followed by Years Three to Four dedicated to original doctoral research and thesis completion, making the total duration approximately 4–4.5 years.
To apply, you must download the Expression of Interest (EOI) form, complete it, and email it along with supporting documents to econ.hdr@unsw.edu.au with the subject line 'Economics PhD EOI.' Applications open 20 March 2026 and close 15 August 2026. Supporting documents include an academic CV, transcripts, GRE scores, proof of English language proficiency (if applicable), and any other relevant documents such as a research statement or completed research papers.
Yes. Candidates with a first-class Honours or Master's degree (with a substantial research component) may apply for direct entry to the PhD (3 years). Direct entry requires an independent funding source, such as an external scholarship or supervisor ARC funding. Applicants should select 'Direct Entry PhD' on the EOI form and include a copy of their thesis and details of their funding source.
The faculty lead several research centres, including the Manos Institute for Cognitive Economics (the world's first institute dedicated to cognitive economics), the AGORA Centre for Market Design (applying game theory, experimental economics, and computer science to design better auctions and markets), the Resilient Democracy Lab (a joint initiative with UNSW Law & Justice developing evidence-based policies to strengthen democratic resilience), and STEP UP: Smart Tech & Education Program (using technology and randomised controlled trials to close educational attainment gaps).
