Doctor of Philosophy (Economics and Finance) Research

The course is by research and normally requires three to four years full-time or equivalent part-time study, with a maximum duration of four years full-time.

Applicants are required to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independent research and have adequate training and ability to pursue the proposed research course. Generally, this may be a master degree or bachelor degree with first or upper second class honours. Alternatively, applicants may hold a degree or equivalent in commerce majoring in economics and/or finance and/or property with a high course weighted average, an honours degree in economics or finance, or completion of a professional master in economics and/or finance and/or property or related field with above average academic performance.

Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are successful applicants of a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program are eligible for a tuition fee exemption under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP), covering up to four years of full-time equivalent study for Doctoral or PhD programs.

During the program, you will demonstrate expert understanding of theoretical knowledge and reflect critically on that knowledge and your practice, think critically, evaluate existing knowledge and ideas, undertake systematic investigation, apply expert creative, technical and professional skills, present a complex investigation of originality for external examination against international standards, communicate complex research concepts to peers and the national and international research community, and design, implement, analyse, theorise and communicate research that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge and/or professional practice.

The program is offered at Curtin Perth on campus. Intake is available in Research Term 1 and Research Term 2 for both 2026 and 2027.
