Common Questions
The VCIDF Scheme is exclusively open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people under the 'Special Measures' provision of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act 2010. Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage is required at both the time of application for the VCIDF role and for PhD candidature.
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant discipline awarded with honours (with at least a distinction average of 70% or higher in the final year and a research component of at least 25%), OR a master's degree with a research component and an overall distinction average, OR a master's degree without a research component with at least a high distinction average (80% or higher), OR evidence of appropriate academic qualifications and/or experience as assessed by the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research Training and Development.
There are four key steps: Step 1 involves submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the RMIT application portal; Step 2 requires completing a full PhD application upon invitation; Step 3 involves an interview with the VCIDF selection panel for shortlisted candidates; and Step 4 requires successful candidates to apply for the advertised VCIDF position through Workday, including a cover letter, CV, and Aboriginality confirmation document.
The VCIDF scheme provides structured early-career pathways combining mentorship, professional development, and cohort-based support to tackle barriers like isolation, underrepresentation, and limited tailored guidance. Fellows also have access to RMIT's Ngarara Willim centre and RMIT's commitment to Australian Indigenous cultures.
Candidates who are not successful for the VCIDF may still be considered for the RMIT Indigenous HDR Scholarship (RIHS), which provides an alternative pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander higher degree research candidates.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
