Doctor of Philosophy (Mechanical Engineering) Research

A higher degree by research differs from other postgraduate degrees in that at least two-thirds of the study program must involve research. Although some coursework units may be required, the main part of your work will be in the form of a thesis written under the guidance of a supervisor and associate supervisor(s).

Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are successful applicants of a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program are eligible for a tuition fee exemption under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP): up to four years of full-time equivalent study for Doctoral or PhD programs.

Curtin requires all applicants to demonstrate proficiency in English. For this course, the IELTS Academic requirements are: Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.0, Reading 6.0, Listening 6.0, and an Overall band score of 6.5. English proficiency may also be demonstrated using other accepted tests and qualifications.

You will develop skills including: demonstrating expert understanding of theoretical knowledge, thinking critically and generating original knowledge, applying expert creative, technical and professional skills, critiquing theoretical propositions and methodologies, presenting complex investigations for external examination against international standards, communicating research concepts to peers and the international research community, and designing and implementing research that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge and/or professional practice.

Throughout your studies, our faculties will provide you with access to equipment and resources to support your research, and financial assistance to attend appropriate local and international conferences. You will also be guided by a supervisor and associate supervisor(s) throughout the thesis process.
