Doctor of Philosophy (Public Policy) Research

The main focus is on original research. At least two-thirds of the study program must involve research, and the main part of your work will be in the form of a thesis written under the guidance of a supervisor and associate supervisor(s). Your thesis must be a substantial original contribution to knowledge or understanding of any field through the discovery of new facts, the formulation of theories, or the innovative reinterpretation of known data and established ideas.

Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are successful applicants of a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program are eligible for a tuition fee exemption under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP), covering up to four years of full-time equivalent study for Doctoral or PhD programs.

International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency. The IELTS Academic requirements are: Writing 7.0, Speaking 6.5, Reading 7.0, Listening 6.5, and an Overall band score of 6.5. English proficiency may also be demonstrated using other accepted tests and qualifications.

You will learn to demonstrate expert understanding of theoretical knowledge and reflect critically on that knowledge, think critically and generate original knowledge, apply expert creative and professional skills, present a complex investigation of originality for external examination against international standards, communicate complex research concepts to peers and the broader community, and design, implement, analyse, theorise and communicate research that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge and/or professional practice.

The program is offered at Curtin Perth, with intake available in Research Term 1 and Research Term 2 for both 2026 and 2027. Study can be undertaken on campus or online.
