Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are successful applicants of a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program are eligible for a tuition fee exemption under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP): up to four years of full-time equivalent study for Doctoral or PhD programs. Graduates will learn to demonstrate expert understanding of theoretical knowledge and reflect critically on that knowledge and their practice; think critically, evaluate existing knowledge and ideas, undertake systematic investigation and reflect on theory and practice to generate original knowledge; apply expert creative, technical and professional skills; explain and critique theoretical propositions, methodologies and conclusions; present a complex investigation of originality for external examination against international standards; communicate complex research concepts to the community and research peers; and design, implement, analyse, theorise and communicate research that makes a significant and original contribution to knowledge and/or professional practice.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Urban and Regional Planning is delivered at Curtin Perth, with study available both on campus and online across Research Term 1 and Research Term 2 each year (2026 and 2027 intakes available).
Curtin requires all applicants to demonstrate proficiency in English. For this course, the IELTS Academic requirements are: Writing 7.0, Speaking 6.0, Reading 7.0, Listening 6.5, and an Overall band score of 6.5. Proficiency may also be demonstrated using other approved tests and qualifications.
