The Doctor of Sustainable Development will comprise at least two-thirds research and four units of coursework. You will learn cognitive and technical skills relevant to sustainable development and use these skills to undertake a significant research project.
The doctorate is normally four years equivalent full-time study. A doctoral candidate may enrol either full-time or part-time. Part-time students intending to undertake research studies should contact the Director Graduate Studies, Faculty of Humanities.
Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are successful applicants of a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program are eligible for a tuition fee exemption under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP): up to four years of full-time equivalent study for Doctoral or PhD programs.
The Doctor of Sustainable Development is offered at Curtin Perth, with on-campus delivery available for Research Term 1 and Research Term 2 in both 2026 and 2027.
You will develop a systematic and critical understanding of sustainable development at the frontier of inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary knowledge, develop analytical and research skills, communicate new insights through appropriate channels, generate original knowledge pertaining to global and local sustainability issues, and demonstrate autonomy and leadership as an expert practitioner or scholar in sustainable development.
