English Language Program

The University of Tasmania’s English Language Programs are delivered by the University’s English Language Centre in Hobart, for students who need to improve their English to qualify for further study or to enhance their job opportunities. The programs give you the skills to transition into a degree and to develop your English for career or personal purposes.

The program is offered in blocks of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 weeks (CRICOS 0101853), with nine ELC study periods across the year so you can start at a time that suits your plans. Students entering the course are placed at a suitable level through a combination of placement testing on arrival at the ELC and any recognised evidence of ability, such as a current IELTS result — so the number of weeks you study depends on your entry level and your goal.

The Direct Entry / English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program builds academic English skills alongside general English proficiency, so you can succeed at university, advance your career, achieve personal goals, or meet English language requirements such as IELTS. On successful completion of the Direct Entry Program you meet the English language requirements to study your chosen degree at the University of Tasmania, and over 95% of students successfully pass it.

Teaching staff hold university degrees together with specialist postgraduate qualifications in Teaching English as a Second Language, and have an average of 20 years of English language teaching experience. The Centre has received a number of English Australia Awards for Innovation.

Courses feature Tasmanian and Australian-related content that connects your learning to your surroundings, so you gain cultural insights and the confidence to communicate as well as the language itself. On completion you will be able to discuss and present ideas and arguments in English effectively, write academic texts in English effectively, and analyse, evaluate and critically reflect upon English-medium source material to inform written and spoken communication.
