Domestic students:
Students entering the course are placed at a suitable level via a combination of placement testing on arrival at the ELC as well as any recognised evidence of abilities, such as a current IELTS test result. Student weeks in the course therefore varies depending on individual entry level and the desired goal. To enter: General English 1, IELTS 4.0 (no band below 3.5) or a PTE score of 26 is required General English 2, IELTS 4.5 (no band below 4.0) or a PTE score of 29 is required General English 3, IELTS 5.0 (no band below 4.5) or a PTE score of 35 (no skill below 32) is required General English 4 or English for Academic Purposes 1, IELTS 5.0 (no band below 5.0) or a PTE score of 38 (no skill below 35) is required English for Academic Purposes 2, IELTS 5.5 (no band below 5.5) or a PTE score of 46 (no skill below 42) is required *note equivalencies for other recognised test scores (e.g. TOEFL iBT) may also be used

The English Language Centre offers several programs including the Direct Entry / English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program, Study Tours, an English Test Centre, Language Support Programs, and General English courses for group programs.
Yes. When you successfully complete the Direct Entry Program, you meet the English language requirements to study your chosen degree at the University of Tasmania.
The teachers at the English Language Centre are equipped with both university degrees and specialist postgraduate qualifications in Teaching English as a Second Language, and they have an average of 20 years of English language teaching experience.
Over 95% of students successfully pass the Direct Entry Program at the English Language Centre.
