The University of Newcastle offers several school programs including the Science and Engineering Challenge (a nationwide outreach program to inspire students to study science and engineering), SMART science shows, School Holiday Courses (free NUPrep short university courses for Year 11 and 12 students), the Watt Space School Program, the High Performing Students Program (allowing exceptional high school students to undertake first year university courses while still at school), and Friends on Campus (a transition program for students in years 10, 11 and 12 thinking about studying at university).
The University of Newcastle offers a range of community programs including 14 clinics providing free and low-cost services, Indigenous community engagement initiatives, the Confucius Institute offering Chinese literacy programs in the Hunter, the Central Coast and regional NSW, music lessons through the Conservatorium for all ages and levels of experience, the Department of Rural Health, the community radio station 2NURFM, and University libraries open and available to the whole community.
Friends on Campus is a transition program for high school students in years 10, 11 and 12 who are thinking about studying at university. Students can ask questions and seek advice from senior university students and staff about moving from high school to university.
The High Performing Students Program gives exceptional high school students the opportunity to get a 'taste' of tertiary education by undertaking first year university courses while still at school.
The Science, Maths and Real Technology (SMART) outreach program offers live, interactive, demonstration based science shows to schools through the University's Faculty of Science.
