Beginner
Learn how to ask and answer questions, use everyday expressions, and introduce yourself effectively. Master the essential skills for confident communication.
Elementary
Students will understand and use essential phrases related to immediate topics such as family, shopping, and employment. They will confidently participate in simple conversations about everyday topics and interact effectively in a variety of everyday situations.
Pre-Intermediate
Students understand ideas in familiar contexts and can write short, coherent texts about topics, goals and personal opinions. Improve language skills for effective communication in everyday situations.
Intermediate
Students understand complex texts, interact fluently with native speakers, and develop written content on a variety of topics. They can discuss current issues and points of view by analyzing the pros and cons of multiple options.
Upper Intermediate
Students understand extended texts, grasp implicit meanings and communicate fluently in social, academic and professional contexts. They develop well-structured written content.
Advanced
Students effortlessly understand and summarise information from a variety of sources, presenting coherent arguments. They express themselves spontaneously and accurately even in complex situations.
Common Questions
There are no specific educational prerequisites for entry into this course, as entry is based on an assessment of English language proficiency. Students will be assessed by Australian Sovereign College at orientation using the Placement Test and interview, and must be 18 years old or above. They will then be placed in the appropriate class level.
The General English course runs for up to 70 weeks. The study load is 20 hours a week in the classroom and 4 hours of structured self-study, totalling 24 hours per week.
The course is structured into 6 levels: Beginners, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced. Students are placed into the appropriate level based on their Placement Test and interview results at orientation.
The General English course is available at three Melbourne campuses: L10/601 Bourke St Melbourne, 395-397 Victoria St Abbotsford, and 61 Riggall St Broadmeadows. The program offers flexible schedules with both morning and afternoon (evening) class times, and admissions are available every Monday.
The course uses innovative teaching through VAK/VARK methodologies that incorporate technology, gamification and experiential learning approaches. Classes include listening and reading activities, audio-visual aids, vocabulary development, grammar practice, English games, Aussie slang practice, and focused 1-on-1 mentoring to detect areas for improvement. Students are required to bring their own laptop with Office 365 (or similar program) to all classes.
