The General Intensive English course covers Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing, Vocabulary, Structure, and Function. The course is delivered using communicative methods with the emphasis on the importance of vocabulary, grammar, and the four macro skills of Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Listening.
Students will be able to produce outcomes of CEFR A2 to B2 within the level of IELTS band of 3.5 to 6.0. The levels range from Elementary (IELTS 3.5–4.0, CEFR A2) through Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate, to Advanced (IELTS 5.5–6.0, CEFR B2).
Formative assessments are conducted on a fortnightly basis, and summative assessments are conducted in week 5 and week 10. Students must participate in a minimum of one summative assessment during each 10-week study period. Assessment methods include role-play and presentations for Speaking (10 seconds to 2 minutes), listening exercises (5–15 minutes), writing tasks such as stories, reports, and emails (20–40 minutes), reading comprehension (20–40 minutes), and Grammar & Vocabulary quizzes (30 minutes to 1 hour). All results are recorded on the Academic Progress Record Sheet.
To enrol in the General Intensive English course, students must have an IELTS score of 3.5 and be over 18 years of age.
Teachers at Whitsundays College of English are required to hold a University degree or a 3-year Diploma, plus specialist English language teaching qualifications. They are selected for their teaching skills and enthusiasm.
