About This Course

This foundation course is ideal if you want to extend your skills in a creative discipline, add new skill sets to your repertoire, or gain new skills in the arts if you're planning for a career change. This is a hands-on, practical course with a strong theoretical focus. You will be taught by industry and academic experts who can connect you to relevant industries and creative communities. You will specialise in one of the following areas: Creative Writing, Digital Communications, Fine Art, Professional Writing and Publishing, Screen Arts. During your studies, you will practise your skills in our purpose-built facilities and creative outlets, such as the Media Production Studio, painting and sculpture studios and the student-run Grok magazine, and be inspired by the creative works of the John Curtin Gallery. Upon completing this course, you will be able to apply specialised expertise in creative professional settings. You will also be eligible to enrol in our Master of Arts degree course.

General Requirements

Applicants require a 3 or 4-year bachelor's degree in any field from a recognised tertiary education institution.
Students who have completed more than 50 credits of undergraduate units from a discipline area cannot choose a stream in that same discipline area for this Graduate Certificate course.
English requirements: IELTS Academic — Writing 6, Speaking 6, Reading 6, Listening 6, Overall band score 6.5.
English proficiency may also be demonstrated using other approved tests and qualifications as outlined by Curtin University.

How much does the Graduate Certificate in Arts cost for domestic students?

The indicative 2026 domestic fee-paying postgraduate fee is $13,127, based on a first-year full-time study load of 100 credits. The total cost will depend on your course options, including units selected and time taken to complete. Domestic fee-paying students may be eligible for FEE-HELP assistance.

Is the course available online?

The course is primarily delivered on campus at Curtin Perth; however, most units in the Digital Communications Stream are available via online study.

What industry experience will I gain during the Graduate Certificate in Arts?

You will undertake a major project under the supervision of an experienced member of staff, which can become an important portfolio piece. You will also practise your skills on placement with industry, arts and community organisations in Australia and overseas, and may have the opportunity to engage with award-winning artists, writers and researchers through on-campus residency programs.
