Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy

The Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy provides the foundational, practical and theoretical counselling knowledge needed to support Australia's mental health workforce, in six months of study.
Your studies cover fundamental counselling skills, counselling and psychotherapy theory, ethics, attachment processes, and qualitative research methods in health. You complete two core courses and two elective courses, with the core focusing on introductory counselling skills — the fundamental elements of counselling including listening, observing and responding.
Practical counselling skills are established and then deepened through case studies, with opportunities to practise what you learn, and electives let you tailor the certificate to your interests.
Teaching is by experienced counsellors, and the certificate prepares you to work across settings including schools, community organisations and private practice, supporting people experiencing emotional struggles or stress.
The qualification stacks: you can continue into the Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy or a master's degree.
The program is 24 units — 12 units of core courses and 12 units of electives — taken full time over half a year at the Adelaide City Campus, with a February intake.
