Course Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (GCES) builds the knowledge and skills of students to increase their impact and capability in the workplace. The course aims to inspire and empower Christian teachers to serve God with excellence in education, in the context of spirituality, wellbeing, integrity and service.
The GCES program has four specialisation options as follows, or may be undertaken without a specialisation:

GCES units are recognised as accredited Professional Development with all Australian State Accreditation Authorities, contributing 50 hours each of elective professional development to the maintenance period in which they are completed.

All units in the GCES are offered online; however, there is an annual on-campus component called Winter School, held on the Lake Macquarie campus for one week (5 days) during July. Attendance at Winter School is strongly recommended, though online attendance is available where circumstances make it difficult to attend in person.
The GCES program offers four specialisation options: Leadership & Administration, Special & Inclusive Education, Curriculum & Teaching, and Health & Wellbeing. Selecting a specialisation is not mandatory, and the course may also be undertaken without one. If a specialisation is chosen, all units must be selected from the same specialisation, and specialisations are printed on the testamur at graduation.
To qualify for admission, applicants must have achieved an Australian four-year Bachelor's degree in Education, a Bachelor's degree followed by a Diploma of Education, a Bachelor of Teaching, or an equivalent qualification; or an overseas qualification comparable to an Australian Bachelor's degree or higher. Applicants must also submit a resume/CV or written summary demonstrating at least two years of relevant work experience (maximum 2 pages). In exceptional circumstances, an applicant may be admitted based on qualifications deemed equivalent as assessed by the Course Convenor in consultation with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
The course is offered part-time and typically takes 1 year to complete. It is not offered full-time. The maximum time for completion is 4 years. The course consists of four units totalling 24 credit points, with each 6 credit point unit requiring a notional time commitment of 150 hours.
Yes, GCES units are recognised as accredited Professional Development with all Australian State Accreditation Authorities, contributing 50 hours each of elective professional development to the maintenance period in which they are completed. Additionally, Adventist Schools Australia employees may seek sponsorship for tuition and educational expenses.
