The course is taught at Murdoch's Food Centre located at Nambeelup, which is part of the Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia (FIPWA). Students will have the opportunity to develop theoretical and practical skills while working in a real food processing environment.
Yes, the course is available in both full-time and part-time study modes, giving you the flexibility to fit study into your working life. Full time, the course can be completed in as little as six months (one semester).
You will learn food engineering and how to analyse and communicate how raw materials and processing affects final food product quality and nutrition; food safety and how to adapt food production processes to incorporate risk analysis and food safety planning; food product design solutions to address problems in or improve food products and systems (product development, quality improvement, shelf-life extension or engineering optimisation); and key principles of human nutrition.
Yes, you have the option of progressing to the Graduate Diploma on successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Food Science.
The primary entry requirement is a Bachelor of Science in a cognate discipline (AQF Level 7). Other AQF Level 7 qualifications will be considered if they are broadly relevant to food science and contain units in biological or chemical sciences, at the discretion of the Academic Chair. Entry may also be granted based on satisfactory preparation through informal or non-formal learning and/or professional experiences, subject to the approval of the Academic Chair.
