The Graduate Certificate in Mathematical Sciences equips you with the tools to explore complicated data, extract meaningful insights and build predictive models.
You study four courses in a single semester: core courses in advanced algebra and multivariable calculus, alongside two electives that let you focus on your areas of interest while strengthening your fundamentals.
The algebra course explores abstract structures such as groups, rings and fields that underpin the foundations of mathematics, covering equations and their properties and methods of solution, algebraic structures and their relationships, vector spaces and linear transformations — a foundation for understanding complex mathematical systems, with applications across computer graphics and data analysis. Multivariable calculus builds the ability to analyse complex mathematical structures and solve problems involving multiple variables.
The certificate boosts skills in mathematical modelling of real-world phenomena, teaches you to apply mathematical logic and rigour across growing industries, and develops professional abilities in critical and creative thinking, with specialist knowledge available through the elective courses.
Adelaide University frames the field as the language underpinning industries from engineering to biology and finance, applied to problems such as the aerodynamics of flight, the design of telecommunication networks, population growth, genome sequencing and stock market trading.
The program is 24 units, taken full time over half a year across the Adelaide City and Mawson Lakes campuses, with a February intake.
