About This Course

Begin your career as an English language teacher in Australia or abroad at UTS, a leading provider of English language, literacy and numeracy qualifications. UTS is a leading provider of postgraduate specialist courses in teaching English to speakers of overseas languages (TESOL) and applied linguistics, including adult literacy and numeracy. The program is designed for both domestic and international students whose purpose is to: 1. start a career or advance their career in teaching literacy, numeracy and English language to adults; 2. add a specialism or develop their specialism in teaching English as an additional language to school children; or 3. start a career or advance their career in teaching English for academic purposes. Students new to teaching are recommended to start from the Graduate Certificate level, while those who are already teaching typically gain Recognition for Prior Learning (RPL) for the earlier subjects and will benefit more from studying the Graduate Diploma or Master courses. The courses develop teachers of English as an additional language and literacy through a practice-oriented approach informed by research and scholarship from the larger field of applied linguistics. The pedagogies adopt a contemporary 3M/3C approach: promoting Multilingual, Multicultural and Multimodal affordances for student learning in a Critically Constructed Curriculum, where aspects of the content and learning processes are collaboratively developed with students.

This course is not an initial teacher education program for school teachers.
You must be a qualified school teacher to become TESOL/literacy specialists in primary or secondary schools.
Students new to teaching are recommended to start from the Graduate Certificate level.
You may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if you are a qualified teacher.
