Design Studio (Sustainable Futures stream)
Focus on sustainable design in the context of social-environmental-technological systems; speculate on how strategic design can mobilise and support systemic changes, from products and services to governance; explore sustainability from urban systems to molecular bio-design and sociological understanding for large scale behavioural change
Design Studio (Digital Design and Fabrication stream)
Develop experience and expertise in the creation of flexible computational, physical and mixed reality models; utilise fused deposition modelling print technology, laser-cutting and CNC fabrication in the prototyping of complex geometrical form; application of performance based and generative modelling
Design Studio (Interactive Technologies stream)
Investigate the connections between data, information and people in the design of interactive and intelligent objects and spaces; explore interactive systems using electronic sensing devices, actuation mechanisms and integrations with digital media; integrate user interface and user experience methodologies into holistic design proposals
Design Studio (Immersive Experience stream)
Explore techniques for the creation of embodied, sensorial and affective immersive environments; develop methods for the production of recorded or synthesised sound fields to create complex three-dimensional acoustic effects; develop phenomenological approaches to the shaping of both virtual environments and physical installations

For domestic (local) students, the 2026 indicative total fee is AU$20,160 (full-fee paying place). For international students, the 2026 indicative total fee is AU$23,520. In addition, a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of up to AU$373 applies for 2026. Eligible domestic students may apply to defer tuition fees via the Commonwealth Government's FEE-HELP loan scheme.
To complete this graduate certificate, you must complete 2 elective subjects and one design studio. You have the opportunity to specialise in one of 4 different streams: Sustainable Futures, Digital Design and Fabrication, Interactive Technologies, or Immersive Experience. Elective subjects provide the technical base to understand a particular research stream, while design studios present real-world projects that employ technology in novel ways.
The program has two intake dates per year: February and July. The campus location is Melbourne City Campus.
You must have successfully completed an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), OR undertaken at least 3 years of work experience or professional practice in a related field. If applying on the basis of professional experience, you must submit a CV and personal statement with your application. There are no prerequisite subjects and no selection task required. You must also meet RMIT's minimum English language requirements (e.g., IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 for postgraduate entry). There is no ATAR requirement — the entry score is listed as 'Not applicable'.
The Graduate Certificate of Design Innovation and Technology takes 6 months to complete full-time, or 1 year part-time. It is delivered on campus at Melbourne City Campus.
Yes. Upon successful completion of this program, you can continue your studies in MC231 Master of Design Innovation and Technology, subject to that program's entrance requirements, and you will receive 48 credit points of advanced standing into the master program.
