About This Course

Are you an aspiring early childhood teacher with an existing degree? This course will equip you to teach in early childhood settings after one year of full-time study. Focusing specifically on children from birth to five years of age, this course is centred on the care and education of children in this age group in partnership with families and communities. This course is built on the principle that students come to the program with strengths from a diverse range of educational and life experiences. Reflective thinking and research, with an emphasis on links between theory and practice is valued. Students develop a deep understanding of the importance of building strong, positive relationships with children, families, communities and colleagues. Students are taught how to develop, implement and assess socially inclusive curricula where children are valued, respected and productively engaged in learning. This course accommodates "principles and dimensions" of excellence and is delivered through mutually beneficial partnerships between ECU, and individual schools and early childhood settings. Available full-time or part-time at Joondalup Campus and Online (domestic students); full-time at Joondalup Campus (international students).

Academic Admission requirements (Band 6) may be satisfied through completion of one of the following: Bachelor degree; or Equivalent prior learning including at least five years relevant professional experience. English Language requirements (Band 5): International students must attain an IELTS Academic with an average level of 7.0 or more, across the four components of listening, speaking, reading and writing; no score below level 6.5 in any of these components; and a score of 7.0 or more in the components of speaking and listening. Internationally schooled applicants may also be required to meet this requirement. English competency requirements may also be satisfied through completion of one of the following: Bachelor degree or master degree from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or the USA, or Undergraduate degree taught in English from a South African University.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of ACECQA accredited programs may apply for registration and work in Australian early childhood education and care settings with children aged birth to five years. Graduates from an ACECQA accredited Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching course may also be eligible to apply for registration as an early childhood teacher with the Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia.

How long does the Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching take to complete?

The course takes 1 year full-time or part-time equivalent (domestic students). International students can study full-time only.

How many professional experience placement days are required?

The Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching will require 60 days of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in the form of professional experience placements. The first professional experience involves working with children from birth to 35 months for 20 days, and the second involves working with children from birth to five years.

What are the fees for this course?

For domestic students, the estimated 1st year indicative fee is AUD $4,750 (Commonwealth supported). For international students, the estimated 1st year indicative fee is AUD $37,700.

Is this course professionally accredited?

Yes. The Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching is accredited with the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Graduates may also be eligible to apply for registration as an early childhood teacher with the Teachers Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA).

What clearances are required before starting the professional experience placement?

All Pre-Service Teachers 18 years of age and over will be required to have a current Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) and a current Working with Children Check, or the equivalent clearance issued by the relevant State authority before commencing this period of Professional Experience.
