Units in this course have a practical emphasis enhanced by classes in the adjacent PathWest laboratories — the State's leading referral pathology laboratory located on the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre (QEIIMC) site. Students have the opportunity to work alongside leading pathologists by undertaking a research project or a practicum at PathWest, with many graduates going on to work or undertake further research there after completing the course.

After completing the Graduate Diploma in Infectious Diseases, students can progress to the Master of Infectious Diseases, the Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Infectious Diseases combined degree, or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). There is also a related Graduate Certificate in Communicable Diseases Epidemiology for those with a public health focus.
The course is aimed at science-based and medical professionals who intend to work in hospital diagnostic or research laboratories, medical clinics, government health departments, and international agencies. It covers Medical Microbiology, Tropical Infectious Diseases, and Public and Environmental Health Microbiology, making it suitable for those with backgrounds in biomedical sciences, medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, public health, veterinary science, or applied biomedical science.
