About This Course

Become a knowledgeable, supportive teaching professional and learn how to guide students along the journey to English language proficiency. The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (TESOL and Applied Linguistics) at UTS is designed for both domestic and international students whose purpose is to start or advance a career in teaching literacy, numeracy and English language to adults; add a specialism in teaching English as an additional language to school children; or start or advance a career in teaching English for academic purposes. The courses develop teachers of English as an additional language and literacy through a practice-oriented approach informed by research and scholarship from the larger field of applied linguistics.

Entry Requirements

Requirements

Students new to teaching are recommended to start from the Graduate Certificate level; those already teaching may benefit more from the Graduate Diploma or Master courses via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
This course is not an initial teacher education program for school teachers.
You must be a qualified school teacher to become a TESOL/literacy specialist in primary or secondary schools.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be available if you are a qualified teacher.

Is the Graduate Diploma in Teaching currently open for enrolment?

No. The Graduate Diploma in Teaching is currently being redesigned and is not available to new students. Prospective students are encouraged to submit an expression of interest to be notified when the course becomes available again.

Is this course suitable for someone who has never taught before?

Students new to teaching are recommended to start from the Graduate Certificate level. Those who are already teaching can typically gain Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for earlier subjects and may benefit more from studying at the Graduate Diploma level.

Does the Graduate Diploma in Teaching include practical teaching experience?

Yes. All TESOL and Applied Linguistics courses at UTS include supervised professional practice placements in schools or colleges, which the university helps students locate through its strong industry networks.

What specialist streams are available within this course?

Students can choose one of three specialist streams: the Adult Literacy and Numeracy stream, the EAL/D and Literacy in Schools stream, or the English for Academic Purposes stream. Each stream consists of 12 credit points of specialist subjects.
