To be considered for admission, you will need either a completed bachelor degree or higher, OR at least two years' relevant work experience (or part-time equivalent) in areas such as the Development and Humanitarian Sector, government, community development, or related fields. You must also meet English language proficiency requirements, such as an IELTS overall score of 6.5 (with no band score less than 6.0), or a bachelor degree from a recognised English-speaking country.
The estimated tuition fee for a full-fee paying place is $27,400 for 1 year full-time. This is a guide only and represents the typical tuition fees for students completing the course within the same year they started. You may be eligible for a Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) loan, such as FEE-HELP or HECS-HELP, depending on your course, type of fee place, and citizenship or residency status. Deakin alumni may also be eligible for a 10% discount on enrolment fees per unit.
To complete the Graduate Diploma of Humanitarianism and Development, you must pass 8 credit points, comprising a compulsory 0-credit point module (Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin), 2 credit points of core units (Food and Water Security and Disaster Risk Reduction and Community Led Recovery), and 6 credit points chosen from a wide range of course electives. As a full-time student you will study four credit points per trimester and usually undertake two trimesters per year.
Yes, the Graduate Diploma is a guaranteed pathway to the Master of Humanitarianism and Development. Progressing to the master's level provides access to further research pathways, industry placement and international opportunities, as well as specialised study streams.
The course is available at two intakes: Trimester 1 starting in March and Trimester 2 starting in July. It is offered at Burwood (Melbourne) and online. Direct applications to Deakin for Trimester 2 2026 close on 21 June 2026.
