The Graduate Diploma of Medical Science offers two pathways: one as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) and the other as a Clinical Measurements Scientist (CMS). Each pathway leads to different career specialisations — the MLS pathway focuses on diagnostic pathology areas such as microbiology, haematology, and histopathology, while the CMS pathway leads to roles such as cardiac scientist, respiratory scientist, sleep scientist, or neuroscientist.
Entry requires completion of an AQF level 7 bachelor degree in biomedical sciences or an equivalent related degree. Students wishing to complete the Medical Laboratory Science major are admitted on a case-by-case basis following discussions with the academic advisor for biomedical sciences, to ascertain completion of subjects fulfilling the Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS) requirements for accreditation.
Yes. Students must complete clinical placement at public and private Clinical Measurements or Medical Science Laboratories. The course may also have specific admission requirements such as immunisation, a Suitability to Work with Children Card, a federal police check, and/or other requirements. Students must complete all Professional Experience Placement requirements by the prescribed deadlines and maintain currency of all certifications in order to stay admitted in the course.
For 2026, the estimated annual Commonwealth Supported fee is AUD $11,550 for a full-time study load, and the estimated annual tuition fee is AUD $36,357 for a full-time study load. These figures are subject to change in following years, and the Student Services and Amenities Fee is also required. Fee deferral and scholarships are available if eligible.
Yes. Graduates may be eligible for membership with the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS). Graduates who complete the Clinical Measurements Scientist (CMS) major may also be eligible for membership with the Australian Council of Clinical Physiologists (ACCP) or Professionals in Cardiac Sciences Australia (PICSA).
