Common Questions
The cognate stream is for applicants who hold an Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in Information Technology or a related discipline such as computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or networking. The non-cognate stream is for applicants who hold an Australian bachelor degree or equivalent in any other discipline. Non-cognate students complete additional core units (such as Fundamentals of Operating Systems and Programming and Data and Information Management) to build foundational knowledge before progressing to advanced networking topics.
A Graduate Diploma of Networking can lead to employment at a more senior level working alongside systems architects as a structural, cloud or networking engineer. Possible roles include Network Manager, Network Analyst, Network Design Engineer, Information Security Analyst, Penetration Tester, Security Architect, IT Security Engineer, Chief Information Security Officer, and more. You could find work at major organisations like Australian Defence Forces, IBM, CISCO or within smaller businesses or startups, with earnings potentially exceeding $100k per annum.
Students use the same tools as industry professionals, including Kali Linux, Virtual Box, servers for security testing, Weka Tool (a collection of machine learning algorithms), QuickHash GUI, SSL Server Cryptography, Keylogger from Spyrix, Cisco Packet Tracer, Spyder, Anaconda 3, Python programming language, MS Access and SQLite, Microsoft Project Management software, an Industry Standard Network Simulation Tool, and Ubuntu for software defined networking applications.
The Graduate Diploma of Networking has intakes in March, July, and November. The course is available at both the Sydney and Melbourne campuses, and is also available online for international students. The CRICOS codes are 067440M and 072670K (NSW).
MIT uses several distinctive teaching approaches including smaller class sizes for more engaging and supported learning, a flipped classroom model where students arrive prepared to build on their learning, a supportive academic program called InSPIRE tailored to each student, hands-on experience using the latest tools to test and strengthen online networks, and engaging events like the Hackathon where students test their skills on real systems.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
