The course is 1 year full time in duration, with intakes available in February, April, July, and October.
The course is made up of 11 units (5 core and 6 electives) and includes 50 hours of work placement. Students generally need to find their own workplace/employer/mentor for approval by AC, though in some cases a new area of work within a student's current paid workplace may be suitable for placement.
Entry is open to individuals who hold a bachelor's degree or higher in counselling, psychology, social work, social sciences or equivalent; or a Diploma of Counselling from the CHC Community Services Training Package or equivalent; or who can demonstrate documented work experience in a family counselling environment with autonomous application of in-depth knowledge, independent judgement and decision-making. All applicants must also provide identity documents such as a birth certificate or valid passport.
Graduates can work as child and family counsellors, family counsellors, contact service practice managers, family relationship counsellors, couples counsellors, marriage/divorce counsellors, youth counsellors, and separation counsellors. They may be employed in settings such as church/mission counselling ministry, social welfare agencies, and counselling clinics.
The course costs $900 per subject. VET Student Loans are available to eligible students to help cover the cost of tuition.
