Yes, the Graduate Diploma of Research Methods is a pathway for students seeking to gain the research experience and understanding of methodologies required for entry into a PhD or research Master degree at JCU. Upon successful completion, you may be eligible to apply to a Higher Degree by Research program at JCU.
You will study two core research subjects and choose four electives from JCU's wide range of research methodology subjects. The course includes developing a research proposal, conducting a literature review, designing an independent research project (including a rationale, methodology and ethics application), writing a research-based thesis, and presenting results in a seminar format.
Entry requires an AQF level 7 bachelor degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum grade point average of 5.0 (credit average) in the final year, or other qualifications recognised by the University as equivalent. Before applying, you should define your research topic and seek the agreement of an experienced JCU advisor.
For 2026, the estimated annual Commonwealth Supported fee is $AUD7,160 and the estimated annual tuition fee is $AUD31,250 for a full-time study load, plus the Student Services and Amenities fee. Fee deferral and scholarships are available if eligible.
The Graduate Diploma of Research Methods is available online, at JCU Townsville, and at JCU Cairns. It commences in February and July each year. It can be completed in 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
