About This Course

If you wish to take an IELTS Preparation course at SCOTS, then you will probably know that IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System Examination. This examination can be taken in over 100 different countries around the world. The IELTS test is used to test the English language proficiency of students who want to study courses taught in English at college or university. If you want to migrate to Australia, the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) will ask you to show evidence of your English language proficiency. The most widely accepted form of English proficiency test accepted by DHA is the IELTS examination. Our IELTS Preparation Course will help you get the score you need in the formal examination.

Scots IELTS Preparation Course is designed to prepare international students, from a range of backgrounds and nationalities, for the Academic Training Module of the IELTS test. If you enrol in this course, you will have as your specific study objective the need to reach a result in an internationally recognised certificate of English language proficiency which will either provide you with a pathway for migration purposes or completion of a tertiary-level course in a mainstream Australian tertiary institution.

The course is not only designed to help you to practise examination techniques, but it will also help you to develop the necessary skills required to pass the IELTS Examination. You will be exposed to a wide variety of materials covering a number of different academic disciplines and will learn, through this exposure, how the task requirements of the IELTS Examination reflect the English Language requirements of tertiary study.

Just like EAP, Scot's IELTS Preparation course is an example of a group of English courses called English for Specific Purposes (ESP). ESP courses are designed because students are studying them for a 'specific' reason – that means the course is designed to meet the requirements of the English learners.

How many levels are in the IELTS Preparation course and how long does each take?

There are two levels in the IELTS Preparation course — Level 1 and Level 2. Each level is a self-contained 12-week course studied full-time at 20 hours per week. You may enrol for the full 24 weeks of the course if you need to increase your IELTS score by more than one band in order to enter your chosen course of further study, employment or migration application.

What are the entry requirements for each level of the IELTS Preparation course?

For IELTS Examination Preparation Level 1, you need to have completed either CEFR level B1 or General English at the Intermediate level. For IELTS Examination Preparation Level 2, you need to have completed either CEFR level B2 or General English at the Upper-Intermediate level.

What does the IELTS Preparation course focus on in terms of exam skills?

The course covers all four sub-tests of the IELTS exam: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Students learn how to write a 250-word essay within 40 minutes, read 3 academic texts and answer 40 questions within 60 minutes, listen to 4 recordings of native speakers and answer 40 questions in 30 minutes, and improve fluency and pronunciation for a 15-minute interview with an IELTS examiner.

What types of IELTS tests does the course prepare students for?

Scots IELTS Preparation Course is designed to prepare international students for the Academic Training Module of the IELTS test. There are two types of IELTS Tests: the IELTS Academic Test — for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English speaking environment — and the IELTS General Training — for those who are going to English-speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs, and as a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

Are there additional learning opportunities beyond the compulsory 20 hours per week?

Yes. In addition to the compulsory 20 hours of the programme, Scots offers and encourages you to avail of the valuable opportunity to attend a guided individual learning session at the end of each formal teaching day. You will have access to computers, resources, books and audio-visual materials to work on essays, research assignment material, etc. A teacher will be made available to you to assist you with any areas which require further development.
