About This Course

Intensive Academic Preparation (IAP) at Hawthorn-Melbourne is designed for international students who already hold an unconditional offer for tertiary study and need to reach the required English level before their course starts. The course runs in 10-week cycles, with students able to enrol for anywhere from 5 to 10 weeks and start on any Monday within the cycle.

Entry requires an IELTS score of around 6.0 overall (writing 6.0, no band under 5.5), or an equivalent TOEFL iBT/PTE Academic score, or an Advanced-level result on Hawthorn-Melbourne's own placement test. Classes run Monday to Friday, 20 hours a week, in the afternoon session (12:45pm–5:05pm), combined with independent study in Hawthorn-Melbourne's Study Hub and optional myEssentials skill-building workshops.

The program develops the critical thinking techniques and academic skills needed to meet the workload of tertiary study, including academic writing, lecture comprehension, presentation skills and research abilities, across reading, writing, listening, speaking and dedicated study skills sessions.

Students are assessed through mid-course and end-of-course tests plus ongoing assessment across all four skills. IAP is a common next step for students who complete UMELBP or EAP and need a further block of academic English before beginning their university, TAFE or other tertiary program. The course is delivered face-to-face at Level 1, 333 Exhibition Street, Melbourne.
