The Connected Studio
First studio subject where students work together to develop the story for the year's 3D animated short film and complete pre-production for the project in specialised departments.
The Collaboration Studio
Second studio subject where students research new visualisation technologies to produce a second creative project, such as real-time and visual effects projects.
The Challenge Studio
Final studio subject where students complete the 3D animated short film and any other outstanding projects to industry standards, culminating in an End of Year Showcase.
Common Questions
Students can choose from the following specialisations: Art Department, Pre-Visualisation/Layout, Modelling, Rigging, Animation (3D only), Effects (FX), Surfacing, Lighting, Compositing, Technical Direction, and Production Management. Applicants must nominate one specialisation as part of their application.
The Master of Animation and Visualisation was developed in partnership with Netflix Animation Studios (formerly Animal Logic), one of Australia's leading animation studios. The UTS Animal Logic Academy studio is co-designed with industry and offers students the opportunity to learn in a professionally equipped, state-of-the-art digital production studio. Industry presentations are also provided by studios such as ILM, Flying Bark, Fin Design, DNEG, Framestore and more.
The indicative first-year tuition fee for domestic students is $40,650.00, with an indicative total tuition fee of $61,890.00 (AUD). Students can choose to pay fees upfront per session or defer them using a government FEE-HELP loan if eligible. UTS graduates may also be eligible for a 10% discount through the Alumni Advantage Program.
Students will develop and produce a studio-level 3D animation short film and an emerging visualisation project. In the first studio, students develop the story and complete pre-production for the animated short film. In the second studio, students research new visualisation technologies such as real-time and visual effects projects. In the final studio, students complete the 3D animated short film to industry standards, with the work showcased at an End of Year Showcase attended by key industry partners.
For domestic students, applications are assessed in rounds: 1st round offers close 30 October 2026, 2nd round offers close 30 November 2026, and the final round closes 25 January 2027. For international students, offshore applicants must apply by 30 October 2026, and onshore applicants by 14 January 2027. Note that applications received after 30 October 2026 will be assessed based on availability of places.
