About This Course

If you are currently working in the finance industry or a recent graduate, you will benefit from the specialised knowledge learned in this course. During the degree, you will study the theory and practice of financial management and understand the global financial system. Additionally, competing approaches to corporate governance and business ethics will be analysed and developed, while you learn how to provide protection against portfolio, financial and corporate risks. You will also examine the legal framework establishing, controlling and regulating financial institutions and examine bank management theory, a bank's lending process and the securities associated with it. Students also have the option to complete a double specialisation in Investing and Financial Technology in the 2 year program Master of Applied Finance (Double specialisation). Fee subsidised places available The degree is targeted at students who have a bachelor degree in business, engineering, mathematics or IT. If you do not have an academic background in these areas you should consider studying the Graduate Certificate in Applied Finance. Domestic students have the option to study on campus or via distance delivery mode. Distance refers to learning activities that do not require you to attend campus, but instead allow you to join pre-scheduled virtual classes.

General Requirements

Domestic Students

A recognised bachelor’s degree in a Business, Engineering, Maths, or IT-related specialisation with an equivalent average mark of 50%, OR A recognised master’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 50%, OR Any Graduate Certificate or diploma in a finance-related field with an equivalent average mark of 50%, Other tertiary qualifications combined with extensive professional work experience will be considered.

Work and life experience:

Admission to UOW is primarily based on your academic qualifications, with work or life experience generally not considered. If you do not meet the academic requirements for this course, we recommend exploring recognized pathway programs, such as those offered by UOW College or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).

Is the Master of Applied Finance (Double Specialisation) accredited by any professional bodies?

Yes. The Master of Applied Finance (Double Specialisation) has been accepted into the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program. This status is granted to institutions whose degree program(s) incorporate at least 70% of the CFA Program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK), which provides students with a solid grounding in the CBOK and positions them well to sit for the CFA exams. In addition, students are strongly recommended to complete the free online learning module, Ethics and Standards of Practice available through the CFA Institute.
