The Writing and Research Centre is unique in Australia in the way it combines scholarship, authorship and expertise in publishing. It includes some of Australia's most celebrated writers such as the novelists Felicity Castagna, George Haddad, Luke Carman, Mette Jakobsen and Alexis Wright, as well as widely published literary scholars and critics with international reputations. The Centre also houses the highly decorated literary press Giramondo Publishing, and the pre-eminent literary review site in Australia, The Sydney Review of Books.
The course takes 1.5 years to complete full time, and is also available part time. Note that part-time study is not available to International Students on a Student Visa.
The Master of Arts in Literature and Creative Writing has three available intake dates: 20 July 2026 (Spring 2026), 01 March 2027 (Autumn 2027), and 19 July 2027 (Spring 2027).
Yes, discounted student fees are available through Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) when undertaking this course in 2026. The indicative annual fee from a CSP is $11,885.
Students can produce either works of scholarship or creative writing, or related creative work that crosses into other areas including music, art, performance and film. The program connects creative writing practice to ideas and creative work from the arts and sciences, allowing students to think across creative, critical and disciplinary categories.
