Students are required to write a thesis of 30,000 words, applying specialist knowledge to make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in their chosen discipline.
The degree is usually undertaken over 18 months full-time or three years part-time, though the official course duration is listed as 2 years full time or 4 years part time.
The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (GSHSS) only accepts applications for Semester 1 commencement, which begins in March. There is no mid-year intake, and you are expected to begin your degree by the first week of Semester 1.
Not all areas are currently available. The School of Social and Political Science is not considering applications for this degree, and the intakes into Anthropology, Criminology, Development Studies, Political Science and Socio-Legal Studies have been suspended until further notice.
The University of Melbourne provides research students with support including workshops, seminars and coursework leadership programs. Students will also study coursework elements that enhance their research training experience and cultivate high-level research and writing skills.
