Course Content
Information Systems Applications in Business
Provides an introduction to the subject of information systems (IS) by presenting the most relevant concepts used to manage the integration of IS into business and society. Facilitates proficient ways to simplify the use of technology in complex IS business environments. Using case studies and industry examples, students develop both a theoretical and practical understanding of business information systems. Builds students' awareness of the relationship between the functionality of IS and the requirements of business processes, and how organisations use IS to process data into information for critical decision-making and competitive advantage.
Database Management System
Introduces students to the fundamentals of relational databases. Covers data modelling using entity relationship diagrams and advanced concepts such as structured query language (SQL) and procedural language (PL). Also covers data analysis, sharing options, database systems security concepts, distributed database management systems and data mining. Learning outcomes are attained through authentic assessment applying relevant concepts, techniques and methodologies.
Software Development
Students learn the fundamentals of software development, including investigating a client's application software problems, evaluating approaches, and designing a solution using a programming language such as Python. Covers the full lifecycle of a software development project including writing specifications, testing and design. Students gather and analyse customer software needs and requirements, learn core principles of programming, develop software specifications and use appropriate reference tools.
Systems Analysis Design
Covers the principles of analysis and design for information systems. Students learn techniques in data requirements gathering and analysis, along with methods to model data needs at the conceptual, logical, and physical levels. Addresses the importance and constraints imposed by the domain of the information system, business rules guiding design, functional dependencies and domain normalisation as part of requirements analysis and design using a user-centred design approach.

Course fees are to be paid in full before enrolment or selection of subjects in any given semester. Fees are subject to change without notice.
The course has intakes in February, March, May, June, August, September, October, and November each year. For example, the 2026 Semester 1 Block 4 has an orientation on 27 May 2026 and classes commencing 1 June 2026.
To complete the Graduate Certificate of Business Information Systems, you must pass 4 core units worth 10 credit points each, totalling 40 credit points. The four core units are: MBIS4001 Information Systems Applications in Business, MBIS4002 Database Management System, MBIS4003 Software Development, and MBIS4004 Systems Analysis Design.
Completion of this qualification provides direct entry and advanced standing into six postgraduate courses: the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems, the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems (Cyber Security), the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems (Data Analytics), the Master of Business Information Systems, the Masters of Business Information Systems (Cyber Security), and the Masters of Business Information Systems (Data Analytics).
If studying full-time, you will have approximately 8 hours of on-campus classes each week. In addition, you will need to set aside a minimum of 10–12 hours per week in your own time to complete assignments, readings, projects, and prepare for quizzes and presentations.
