Course Content
Information Systems Applications in Business
Introduces the most relevant concepts used to manage the integration of IS into business and society. Facilitates proficient ways to simplify the use of technology in complex IS business environments using case studies and industry examples. Builds students' awareness of the relationship between IS functionality and business process requirements.
Database Management Systems
Introduces students to the fundamentals of relational databases. Covers data modelling using entity relationship diagrams, SQL, procedural language (PL), data analysis, sharing options, database systems security, distributed database management systems, and data mining.
Software Development
Students learn the fundamentals of software development including investigating client application software problems, evaluating approaches, and designing solutions using a programming language such as Python. Covers the full software development lifecycle including writing specifications, testing, and design.
Systems Analysis Design
Covers principles of analysis and design for information systems including data requirements gathering, analysis, and modelling at conceptual, logical, and physical levels. Addresses functional dependencies, domain normalisation, and user-centred design approaches.
Professional Practice in Information Systems
Educates students about ethical, legal, and social issues they are likely to encounter as IS professionals, including privacy, confidentiality, cybercrime, and internet fraud. Develops critical thinking skills for ethical and professional decision-making.
Information Systems Security
Provides comprehensive study in information systems security including professional, legal, and ethical issues. Students learn to identify security threats, assess risks, and develop risk management plans to mitigate threats and attacks on contemporary information systems.
Big Data and Visualisation
Introduces big data analytics and visualisation concepts. Covers enterprise technologies, big data business intelligence, algorithms, machine learning techniques, and data visualisation tools and techniques. Pre-requisite: MBIS4002 & MBIS4003.
Business Process Management
Examines and improves business operations using conceptual frameworks and business process modelling software tools. Develops knowledge and skills to analyse and design business processes in a variety of business contexts. Pre-requisite: MBIS4004 (Co-requisite).
Business Analytics
Introduces concepts and techniques to leverage organisational data for effective strategy and decision-making. Covers regression, time series, classification, clustering, and natural language processing. Students use Python, associated libraries, and KNIME to generate insights. Pre-requisite: MBIS4007.
Information Systems Project Management
Develops in-depth understanding of IS project management including project initiation, execution, monitoring, and closure. Focuses on agile project management approaches and tools such as Microsoft Project, Trello, and Monday.com.
Enterprise Systems
Introduces the relationship between business processes and Enterprise Systems (ES). Covers ES architecture, ERP cycles (Order to Cash, Procure to Pay, Hire to Retire, Record to Report), Supply Chain Management, CRM, Financials, and HR/Payroll. Pre-requisite: MBIS4001, MBIS4003, MBIS4008.
Strategic Information Systems
Develops students' ability to critically analyse and evaluate the impact of IS on organisational strategic performance. Covers IS tools, techniques, management frameworks, strategic alignment, and IS as a business enabler. Pre-requisite: MBIS4005.
Sustainability and Enterprise 4.0
Informs students how IS may be deployed through business commitments towards societal and environmental sustainability. Covers Enterprise 4.0 as a digital age core element contributing to sustainable global businesses and economies.
Leading People in Digital Organisations
Introduces modern leadership and management practices applied to organisations managing digital transformations. Students gain knowledge in leading and managing people to support ongoing change processes and develop competitive advantage in the digital era.
Practical Industry Projects - PIP
Capstone project in partnership with Practera. Students solve real-world business challenges for industry clients in groups of up to six, guided by a client mentor and lecturer. Students receive certification and a digital badge. Pre-requisite: completion of 110 course credit points.

To complete the Master of Business Information Systems, students must pass 15 units totalling 160 credit points, delivered over two years. All units are compulsory — there are no electives. Units are split across AQF Level 4000 (AQF 8) and Level 5000 (AQF 9). Students studying full-time will have 12 hours of classes per week (4 units) on-campus, plus approximately 7–9 hours of self-directed study per unit per week.
Yes. Students can exit early with a Graduate Certificate of Business Information Systems after successfully completing 4 units (equivalent to 6 months full-time), or with a Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems after completing 8 units (1 year full-time). The full Master award requires completion of all 15 units (2 years full-time).
The Master of Business Information Systems is offered at AIH's Sydney campus (Level 3 & 4, 545 Kent Street, NSW 2000) and Melbourne campus (Level 1, 20 Queen Street, VIC 3000). Both domestic and international students are welcome to apply. The CRICOS code for international students is 105293J.
Graduates are prepared for roles including business analyst, data analyst, software tester, systems administrator, IT/IS client manager, database administrator, systems project lead, client services manager, project manager, human resource manager, and account executive, in both private and public sectors. Completion of the Master also meets the academic requirement for admission to Doctorate courses within Australia and overseas (subject to additional institution/course-specific requirements).
