Course Content
Information Systems Applications in Business
Introduces information systems (IS) by presenting the most relevant concepts used to manage the integration of IS into business and society. Students develop both theoretical and practical understanding of business information systems and the relationship between IS functionality and business process requirements.
Database Management Systems
Introduces students to the fundamentals of relational databases. Covers data modelling using entity relationship diagrams, structured query language (SQL), procedural language (PL), data analysis, database systems security, distributed database management systems, and data mining.
Software Development
Covers the fundamentals of software development. Students investigate client application software problems, evaluate approaches, and design solutions using a programming language such as Python. Covers the full software development lifecycle including writing specifications, testing and design.
Systems Analysis Design
Covers principles of analysis and design for information systems including data requirements gathering, analysis, and data modelling at conceptual, logical, and physical levels. Addresses functional dependencies, domain normalisation, and user-centred design.
Professional Practice in Information Systems
Educates students about ethical, legal, and social issues in information systems, including privacy, confidentiality, cybercrime, and internet fraud. Develops critical thinking skills for ethical and professional decision-making.
Information Systems Security
Provides comprehensive study in information systems security and an overview of professional, legal, and ethical issues. Students identify security threats, assess risks, and develop risk management plans to mitigate threats and attacks on contemporary information systems.
Big Data and Visualisation
Introduces concepts of big data analytics and visualisation. Covers business motivations for big data adaptation, enterprise technologies, machine learning techniques, and data visualisation tools. Pre-requisite: MBIS4002 & MBIS4003.
Business Process Management
Facilitates students in examining and improving business operations using business process modelling software tools. Students analyse and design business processes in a variety of business contexts. Pre-requisite: MBIS4004 (Co-requisite).
Business Analytics
Introduces concepts and techniques to leverage organisational data for effective strategy and decision-making. Covers regression, time series, classification, clustering, and natural language processing using Python and KNIME. Pre-requisite: MBIS4007.
Information Systems Project Management
Develops in-depth understanding of IS project management covering project initiation, execution, monitoring, and closure. Includes agile project management approaches and tools such as Microsoft Project, Trello, and Monday.com.
Enterprise Systems
Introduces the relationship between business processes and Enterprise Systems (ES). Covers ES architecture, ERP cycles (Order to Cash, Procure to Pay, Hire to Retire, Record to Report), Supply Chain Management, CRM, Financials, and HR/Payroll. Pre-requisite: MBIS4001, MBIS4003, MBIS4008.
Strategic Information Systems
Develops students' abilities to critically analyse and evaluate the impact of IS on organisational strategic performance. Covers IS tools, techniques, management frameworks, strategic alignment, and IS as a business enabler. Pre-requisite: MBIS4005.
Sustainability and Enterprise 4.0
Informs students how information systems may be deployed through business commitments towards societal and environmental sustainability. Discusses key trends and challenges of Enterprise 4.0 through case studies and real-world approaches.
Leading People in Digital Organisations
Introduces modern leadership and management practices applied to organisations managing digital transformations of technology-based business models. Students gain knowledge in leading and managing people to support change processes and develop competitive advantage in the digital era.
Practical Industry Projects - PIP (Part A)
Capstone project in partnership with Practera. Students gain hands-on experience solving real-world business challenges for industry clients, working in groups of up to six guided by a client mentor and lecturer. Students receive certification and a digital badge. Pre-requisite: completion of 110 course credit points.
Practical Industry Projects - PIP (Part B)
Continuation of the Practical Industry Projects Capstone. Pre-requisite: MBIS5015a.

The course offers two nested exit awards: the Graduate Certificate of Business Information Systems (available after successful completion of 4 units; approximately 6 months full-time) and the Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems (available after successful completion of 8 units; approximately 1 year full-time). The full Master of Business Information Systems requires completion of 15 units (160 credit points) over 2 years full-time.
The course has multiple intakes throughout the year: February, March, May, June, August, September, October, and November. For 2026, a specific block (Semester 1, Block 4) begins on 1 June 2026, with orientation on 27 May 2026 and a census date of 8 June 2026.
The Capstone Project is delivered through the Practical Industry Projects (PIP) units (MBIS5015a and MBIS5015b) in partnership with Practera. Students work in groups of up to six on real-world business challenges for industry clients, guided by both a client mentor and a lecturer. Students must have completed 110 course credit points before undertaking MBIS5015a. Upon completion, students receive a certification and a digital badge to add to their CV and LinkedIn profile.
Full-time students attend 12 hours of classes per week on-campus (covering 4 units) and should set aside approximately 7–9 hours per week per unit for self-directed study including assignments, readings, projects, and quiz preparation. Assessment types include individual and team-based projects, case studies and presentations, essays and reports, practical assessments, discussion forums, and class participation/formative assessment activities. All units are compulsory — there are no electives.
The Master of Business Information Systems is delivered at two campuses: Sydney (Level 3 & 4, 545 Kent Street, NSW 2000) and Melbourne (Level 1, 20 Queen Street, VIC 3000). The CRICOS code for this course is 105293J. It is open to both domestic and international students.
