About This Course

The Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology aims to prepare you for practice as an exercise physiologist. Graduates will be able to contribute to interdisciplinary health interventions using exercise as part of the management strategy of disease, dysfunction, and injury across a range of public and private settings and work within an interprofessional environment including rural and remote areas.

Applicants will have normally completed a bachelor degree in the field of sport and/or exercise science (or a related degree) that is accredited, or be a current member or eligible for membership with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an exercise scientist.
Applicants will have completed 140 hours of practicum experience with apparently healthy individuals.
Applicants who hold a closely related non-ESSA accredited course may wish to apply for the 'Graduate Entry Assessment', once they can demonstrate they meet the ESSA Exercise Science Standards and 140 hours of approved practical experience, for membership as an Exercise Scientist.
Applicants must show English language competence equivalent to a score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) or equivalent, unless subject to an exemption as defined by Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA).
Applicants with an ESSA accredited degree will be asked to provide confirmation of the placement topics they completed in their degree to confirm they meet the placement requirements.
Applicants who hold a closely related non-ESSA accredited course and have demonstrated they have met the ESSA Exercise Science Standards through 140 hours of approved practical experience must provide to Flinders University, within ten working days of submitting their application, confirmation of their approved Graduate Entry Assessment.

The Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology prepares you for a career as an exercise physiologist. Exercise physiologists prescribe and deliver exercise-based lifestyle and behaviour modification programs to prevent and treat injury and disease. Potential employers include: hospitals, community health units, workplaces, gymnasiums, aged-care facilities, disability service organisations, sporting clubs and associations, private health clinics, return to work providers, schools, universities and TAFE, sporting academies, not-for-profit or community organisations. Potential occupations include: rehabilitation/allied health work, private practice, acute care, day-care rehabilitation, home-care rehabilitation. This program is accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia. Graduates are eligible to apply to be recognised as Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Accredited Exercise Scientists.

How many clinical placement hours are required for this course?

You will undertake a compulsory 360 hours in clinical exercise physiology placement. Clinical placements can be taken at various metropolitan or rural and remote locations, including the Northern Territory.

What pre-placement requirements do I need to complete before starting my clinical placement?

Before commencing a placement you will need: DHS for Working with Children, Aged Care Sector, and Worker Check; Police Check; SA Tuberculosis Services Screen; Immunisations; Annual Influenza; COVID-19 Vaccination; SA Health Better Placed Deed Poll; Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate; First Aid Certificate; Manual handling; Hand hygiene; Infection Control; and SA Health Electronic Medical Records training. These requirements are subject to change.

What professional accreditation will I be eligible for after graduating?

This program is accredited by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA). Graduates are eligible to apply to be recognised as Accredited Exercise Physiologists and Accredited Exercise Scientists.

What topics will I study in the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology?

The Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology consists of 72 units. You will undertake topics in interprofessional practice, chronic disease management and private practice, exercise management in priority conditions, advanced exercise prescription and musculoskeletal injury management, and clinical exercise assessment and prescription, as well as clinical placements.

What are the fees for the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology in 2026?

For domestic students, the annual indicative fee for 2026 is $31,700 (Full Fee Paying). Government subsidies enable Flinders to offer Domestic applicants a reduction of up to 80% off full course fees through Commonwealth Supported Places. For international students, the annual indicative fee for 2026 is $45,400.
