Common Questions
Upon completion of the Master of Clinical Optometry, you can apply to register with the Optometry Board of Australia (OBA), the Optometrists and Dispensing Board (ODOB) New Zealand, and other registration boards in Asia where the degree is recognised.
There are two pathways. The direct pathway is via entry into the double award 3182 Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Clinical Optometry program, requiring an overall CREDIT average (65%) at the end of the Bachelor of Vision Science component. The alternative pathway is open only to students who have completed program 3181 (BVisSci) from UNSW, requiring at least an overall CREDIT average (65% WAM); however, admission is competitive and only a limited number of places are available.
You'll gain practical experience in UNSW's Optometry Clinic, which is open to the public and uses state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment. You'll see patients from a wide variety of ages from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. The UNSW Optometry Clinic operates several internal clinics that, in conjunction with external placements, offer students a broad experience in many aspects of optometric and eye care including rural and remote optometry, paediatrics, ocular emergencies, contact lenses and myopia progression control.
For domestic students, Commonwealth Supported Places are available. The 2026 indicative CSP first year fee is $13,000 and the indicative CSP fee to complete the degree is $25,500. For domestic full-fee paying students, the 2026 indicative first year full fee is $42,500 and the indicative full fee to complete the degree is $87,000. For international students, the 2026 indicative first year fee is $52,500 and the indicative fee to complete the degree is $109,500.
The program provides a varied education in vision science through connections with the Centre for Eye Health, Brien Holden Vision Institute, and Optometry Giving Sight. UNSW's School of Optometry and Vision Science is the largest school of optometry in Australia and is committed to translational research that will lead to practical applications and significant improvements in community eye health.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
