About This Course

The Master of Commerce (Economics) represents Years 1 and 2 of the 5-year Doctoral Program in Economics and is only available to students pursuing that doctoral program. Year 1 covers core micro/macroeconomics, econometrics, mathematics and economic history; Year 2 requires an Economics Thesis Workshop (two parts) plus six electives. Commencement is Semester 1 only. Students who discontinue after Year 1 having met requirements are eligible for the Graduate Diploma in Commerce (Economics) as an exit award.

General Requirements

Domestic and international:

A four-year undergraduate or postgraduate degree with a strong analytical or mathematical component, WAM of at least H2A (75%), OR equivalent qualification and professional experience
A personal statement (max 1,000 words)
The GRE, unless exempt (completed a tertiary degree in Australia/New Zealand within the preceding 18 months, or facing significant humanitarian issues)
Referee reports (except for University of Melbourne graduates within the last 5 years)
An interview assessing understanding, motivation and time commitment
Economics-background applicants need a major including calculus-based economics plus an econometrics subject (WAM 75%+ across the major); non-economics applicants need a mathematical/analytical major (calculus, linear algebra, statistics) plus second-year microeconomics and macroeconomics (WAM 75%+)
Up to 100 points of credit available for a relevant two-year postgraduate economics degree (WAM 75%+) meeting core/quantitative prerequisites
English requirement: performance band 7 (e.g. IELTS 7.0)
