About This Course

Learn how to creatively apply your existing music skills therapeutically to meet the needs of individuals and groups, through improvisational (creating improvised music), re-creative (creatively using repertoire/songs), compositional (creating songs/music) and receptive (creative listening) music therapy methods. Be a part of a vibrant and dynamic program of study, where you will engage in a creative learning approach on your journey to becoming a career-ready Registered Music Therapist (RMT). As a graduate of this program, you would be joining an evidence-based allied health profession, in which music is used to support people of all ages and life stages (some through the National Disability Insurance Scheme) within the domain areas of cognition, communication, movement, social engagement and emotional wellbeing.

General Requirements

Admission requirements are based on generic domestic/international master-level criteria as specified by Western Sydney University.
Applications for the 2026 intake close 12th January 2026.
Auditions/interviews take place starting 9 February 2026.
Applicants must have existing music skills suitable for therapeutic application.
Discounted student fees are available through Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) when undertaking this course in 2026.

What music therapy methods will I learn in this course?

You will learn to apply your existing music skills through four core methods: improvisational (creating improvised music), re-creative (creatively using repertoire/songs), compositional (creating songs/music) and receptive (creative listening) music therapy methods.

How is the course delivered and how often do I need to attend campus?

You will engage in on-site lectorials (a dynamic integration of lecture & tutorial) one day per week during semester time, with additional online synchronous and asynchronous learning activities on the other days. The course is delivered at the Penrith campus.

What practical training is included in the Master of Creative Music Therapy?

The course includes a hands-on 'Work Integrated Learning' program featuring the innovative SiMPrac (Simulated Music Therapy Practicum) and Music Therapy Placements, which are provided flexibly as weekly or block placement modes, all under the professional supervision of Registered Music Therapists (RMTs).

What are the fees for this course and are any discounts available?

Domestic students may access discounted student fees through Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) with an indicative annual fee from $11,885 when undertaking this course in 2026. International students are charged AUD $35,372.
