This interdisciplinary course immerses students in information technology and statistical analysis. They'll build fluency in Python, data management, project leadership, and analytical techniques giving data a voice including regression modeling, machine learning, data visualization, and more. Emerging practices' ethical implications are examined.

Students explore cutting-edge applications across diverse industries in hands-on projects that allow the experience of the full data science lifecycle – from formulating hypotheses to communicating findings for real-world challenges like recommendation engines, fraud detection, and supply chain optimisation.

The capstone experience will enable students to apply cross-functional expertise through industry internships or original research. Industry placements expose students to authentic data problems and practices, propelling the field forward.

The program has been designed as an advanced course in Data Science for students with a first degree in a numerate discipline.
Data Science is a multi-disciplinary area combining Statistics and Computational methods.
The program includes a full year of preparatory units (6000 level) in both Statistics and Computing to mirror the Data Science Major in our BIT program.
This provides students with the grounding in core topics required for advanced study in the second year.
The advanced level unit are again drawn from both Statistics and Computing with four required units and two selected from an option set.
These units cover statistical theory and practical computational methods such as machine learning and big data processing.
This combination of skills and knowledge is the main requirement from industry for Data Scientists.
The course is completed with a two-unit (20cp) capstone project that can be either an industry placement (internship) or internal research project.
This allows students to gain experience working on real Data Science projects and, for appropriate students, direct exposure to industry problems and practices.
