Master's Thesis
Candidates undertake supervised research with the aim of completing a major thesis of 50,000–60,000 words that demonstrates mastery of inquiry in a field of a discipline or profession. This is the sole form of assessment for the degree.
Common Questions
The Master of Engineering (Research) is assessed solely through the submission of a substantial major thesis of 50,000–60,000 words. Candidates carry out a program of research, investigation or development, and the thesis is the only form of assessment for the degree.
There are three progress reviews: a Preconfirmation review (due 3 months from enrolment) involving completion of thesis-related tasks and attendance at research training workshops; a Confirmation of candidature review (due 9–12 months from enrolment); and a Draft thesis review (due 33–36 months, with a follow-up 3 months prior to thesis submission).
The available research areas include Engineering (general), Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Maritime Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering.
The indicative yearly fee for international students in 2026 is AUD $45,300. Fees are estimates only and are subject to annual review. International students are required to pay tuition fees up-front by the relevant due date.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
