Course Content
Four elemental core units (common to all MSJ streams)
Interdisciplinary grounding in development, peace and conflict, and human rights. Topics include eradicating poverty, facilitating conflict transformation, addressing human rights violations, and responding to environmental crises. (24 credit points)
Three human rights selective units
Solidify knowledge of human rights mechanisms and possible responses from activists, advocates, and human rights practitioners. Case examples include rights of indigenous people, refugee and asylum seekers, and business and human rights. (18 credit points)
Three elective units
Broaden knowledge in social justice-related fields from approved units offered throughout the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. (18 credit points)
Capstone – Dissertation or Internship
Year-long (2-semester) capstone project focusing on a topic relevant to human rights. Options: year-long dissertation project or student placement program. (compulsory)
Common Questions
To qualify for the Master of Social Justice (Human Rights) you must complete 12 units (72 credit points), including four core units (24 credit points), three human rights selective units (18 credit points), three elective units (18 credit points), and a capstone project.
As part of the Master of Social Justice (Human Rights), you are required to complete capstone units of study. You can complete either a year-long dissertation project or a student placement program, with both spanning two semesters and focusing on a topic related to human rights.
The application closing date for Semester 1 is 31 January of the commencing year, and for Semester 2 it is 15 July of the commencing year. Separate deadlines apply for scholarship applications.
