Common Questions
The Master of ICT Research offers three specialised streams: Networking, Data Analytics and Telecommunications. You can explore various research topics including Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics/Data Science, Software Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Computational Intelligence, Micro Robotics, Mechatronics, and Remote Sensing.
The course consists of four trimesters. In Trimester 1, students complete two electives plus one advanced elective from the same specialisation, along with the AIM100 Academic Integrity Module. Trimester 2 covers core units MR501 Research Skills, MR502 Quantitative & Qualitative Research Techniques, and MR601 Research Proposal & Literature Review. Trimester 3 involves MR603 Research Thesis 1 (requiring successful completion of all first-year units), and Trimester 4 involves MR604 Research Thesis 2 (prerequisite MR603). Each unit consists of 20 credit points and a full-time study load is 60 credit points per trimester.
Applicants must have a completed Australian Bachelor degree or equivalent in any ICT discipline, and meet English language requirements: IELTS Academic Overall 6.5 with no band less than 6.0; or TOEFL iBT Overall score 79-93 with minimum scores of Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18, Writing 21; or PTE Academic Overall score 59 with no score less than 52; or Cambridge CAE score of 176 (no band less than 169). Other qualifications and experience may, upon application, be deemed equivalent by the Academic Board of the Institute.
Graduates will work in ICT and related industries in roles such as Data Analyst, Data Scientist, AI Research Scientist, Data Management, Network Analyst, Cyber Security Analyst, Information Security Analyst, and Forensic Computer Analyst. Employment opportunities exist at companies like Google, AWS, KPMG, Defence, CISCO, Huawei, Ericsson, Telstra, and Optus, as well as research roles within the public sector or higher education. The average entry level salary for non-doctorate researcher jobs in Australia ranges from $70k to $100k.
The Master of ICT Research is accredited by TEQSA (Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency) and is classified at Australian Quality Framework (AQF) Level 9. The CRICOS codes are 110649K (VIC) and 110690J (NSW) for international students.
